How To Plan Your Honeymoon
Congratulations! Your significant other popped the question, you have a date set and you are in the midst of planning your amazing wedding! Have you started thinking about your honeymoon yet, and how to plan the amazing adventure that awaits the two of you? Or are you like most people and have no idea where to begin your honeymoon planning?
No matter how you answered those questions, you will want to continue reading for helpful tips on how to plan your honeymoon. This special experience deserves to be more than a mere after thought!
1. When to Travel
Take it from someone who has already gotten married and experienced her honeymoon – do NOT embark on your honeymoon the day after your wedding. Just don’t! Although amazing, your wedding day is a long, emotional day and you will be both physically and emotionally exhausted by the end of it. Give yourself a day to recover before setting off on your romantic journey!
2. Tropical vs Arctic vs Mediterranean – Which Climate to Choose?
Close your eyes and picture yourself and your (soon to be!) spouse on your honeymoon. What details do you see? Many people envision a tropical climate for their honeymoon, I know I did! My husband and I honeymooned in Maui, which was absolutely beautiful. Perhaps you are looking for a tropical destination with crystal clear blue waters, but a little closer to home. If that is the case, you may want to consider one of the Caribbean Islands, such as Saint Lucia.
A tropical climate is not your only option though! Maybe you would like a colder climate or something less tropical. Maybe skiing in the Rockies or exploring Denali National Park in Alaska is something that you have always dreamed about experiencing on your honeymoon.
Don’t forget about the Mediterranean climate! Mediterranean climates are known for mild winters and warm summers. You would find this climate type in Europe which is also a perfect place for a honeymoon!
3. All-Inclusive, Guided Tours, Theme Parks – What Type of Experience Do You Want?
The type of experience that you want for your honeymoon is also important. Do you want an all-inclusive experience? If so, you will be looking at Mexico and the Caribbean islands since all-inclusive resorts are primarily located in those areas. If you want an all-inclusive honeymoon in a different location, I would suggest considering a cruise.
Maybe you would like to partake in guided tours. There are a number of guided tour groups to choose from, however my favorite is Adventures by Disney®. Contrary to what my husband thinks, Mickey Mouse is not making an appearance during these tours. The Disney aspect comes into play with the superior service and attention to detail that you can expect; This makes it a perfect choice for a honeymoon! Adventures by Disney® gets you ‘back-stage’ access to the world that you would not be able to experience anywhere else. They offer tours all around the world, and also have adult-only itineraries which make it a great option!
Perhaps you and your (soon-to-be!) spouse are passionate about Halloween and Harry Potter. You may want to consider honeymooning at Universal Orlando Resort® and experiencing Halloween Horror Nights. Or maybe you really love food, wine and all things Disney. You may want to experience a Food and Wine Festival at Walt Disney World Resort®. Maybe swimming with the dolphins is something that you would love to experience, but you do not want to travel outside of the country. Located in Orlando, Florida, Discovery Cove® (an all-inclusive day resort) would be something that you would want to consider.
One of the advantages of using a travel agent is that we can tailor the options we provide you with to contain the honeymoon that you wish to experience. You may have never even realized that some of these options even existed!
4. Budget – It is More Important than you Think!
Now that you know the type of honeymoon experience you want, you need to think about your budget. How much do you have to spend on your honeymoon? Besides hotel accommodations, make sure you account for other expenses such as airfare, transfers, dining, and excursions! Remember to factor in your travel insurance as well! I cannot stress the importance of that enough.
Travel agents are also great at helping with this aspect. We compare prices between different suppliers to ensure our clients are getting the best price possible. Sometimes there is even promotions that can only be applied booking through a travel agent. If your dream honeymoon is still not within your budget, we can help you determine how to make it fit within your budget constraints. This could mean honeymooning on a cruise instead of staying at an all-inclusive Resort in the Caribbean or adjusting the dates or length of stay slightly.
5. Other Details That You Should Not Forget
So now that you have figured out where you want to go on your honeymoon, you need to actually get there. You will need to make sure to book your airfare and transfers to get you from the airport to your hotel. In most cases, you can also book any excursions that you are interested in prior to arrival! If you are able to make restaurant reservations prior to your arrival, make sure you do that. At the very least, I highly suggest making a mental note of the restaurants you would like to eat at if you are not able to make reservations until you arrive. If there are any shows you are interested or special events that require tickets you will need to remember to book those as well.
6. Research, Research, Research
Remember how time consuming those research papers were during high school and college? Depending on where you are traveling, the research that needs to go into your honeymoon can also become time consuming. Some areas that you should research include:
o The area to which you will be traveling
o Is it safe?
o What is there to do in the area?
o Are there any local customs that you should be aware of?
o What are the Passport and visa requirements to visit this area?
o The hotels and resorts that you are considering
o Is the hotel/room smoking/non-smoking?
o What food options are located at and nearby the hotel/resort?
o Is the bed type guaranteed or is it request only? (Who wants anything other than a king bed on their honeymoon?!?)
o What activities and entertainment are located at the hotel/resort and nearby?
o Is the hotel/resort safe?
o Does the hotel/resort have favorable reviews?
o Is the hotel under refurbishment or is there any other construction of which you should be aware?
For those of you that absolutely hate research (and even those that do not despise it), I would highly recommend reaching out to a travel agent. We take care of all of this for FREE. (See Tip 7!)
7. Use a Travel Agent
Once you determine your budget and the climate that you would like to experience for your honeymoon, I would highly recommend contacting a travel agent, such as myself. In almost all cases, using a travel agent does not cost the client any additional money. This is because travel agents get paid by suppliers. The suppliers charge a hidden fee regardless of if a travel agent is used or not. Travel agents are extremely useful especially when it comes to your honeymoon planning. They do the research for you (yay!), provide you with options that meet your requirements, and act as your advocate. If something with your honeymoon travel plans change, we take care of the details for you. Travel agents are like the wedding planners for your honeymoon and they are FREE! We keep you organized so you can spend the rest of your time planning the rest of your wedding and getting ready to spend the rest of our lives together!
